Reading
1 Samuel 31:1–13
1Now
the Philistines fought against Israel, and the men of Israel fled
before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2And
the Philistines overtook Saul and his sons, and the Philistines
struck down Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul.
3The battle pressed hard against Saul, and the archers
found him, and he was badly wounded by the archers. 4Then
Saul said to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword, and thrust me
through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and thrust me through,
and mistreat me.” But his armor-bearer would not, for he feared
greatly. Therefore Saul took his own sword and fell upon it. 5And
when his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell upon his
sword and died with him. 6Thus Saul died, and his three
sons, and his armor-bearer, and all his men, on the same day
together. 7And when the men of Israel who were on the
other side of the valley and those beyond the Jordan saw that the men
of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they
abandoned their cities and fled. And the Philistines came and lived
in them.
8The
next day, when the Philistines came to strip the slain, they found
Saul and his three sons fallen on Mount Gilboa. 9So they
cut off his head and stripped off his armor and sent messengers
throughout the land of the Philistines, to carry the good news to the
house of their idols and to the people. 10They put his
armor in the temple of Ashtaroth, and they fastened his body to the
wall of Beth-shan. 11But when the inhabitants of
Jabesh-gilead heard what the Philistines had done to Saul, 12all
the valiant men arose and went all night and took the body of Saul
and the bodies of his sons from the wall of Beth-shan, and they came
to Jabesh and burned them there. 13And they took their
bones and buried them under the tamarisk tree in Jabesh and fasted
seven days.
Collect
Heavenly
Father, be with [name] in [his/her] deep distress and sorrow, and
sustain [him/her] by Your Word. Because of what Jesus has done for us
upon the cross, forgive [him/her] all [his/her] sins, strengthen
[his/her] faith, and grant [him/her] Your deliverance and peace.
Renew [him/her] in the knowledge that You are a compassionate God who
knows and loves [him/her]. Let Your holy angel be with [him/her] that
the evil foe may have no power over [him/her]; through Jesus Christ,
Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy
Spirit, one God, now and forever.
764 When
Aimless Violence Takes Those We Love
LSB 764
1 When
aimless violence takes those we love,
When random death strikes childhood’s promise down,
When wrenching loss becomes our daily bread,
We know, O God, You leave us not alone.
When random death strikes childhood’s promise down,
When wrenching loss becomes our daily bread,
We know, O God, You leave us not alone.
2 When
passing years rob sight and strength and mind
Yet fail to still a strongly beating heart,
And grief becomes the fabric of our days,
Dear Lord, You do not stand from us apart.
Yet fail to still a strongly beating heart,
And grief becomes the fabric of our days,
Dear Lord, You do not stand from us apart.
3 Our
faith may flicker low, and hope grow dim,
Yet You, O God, are with us in our pain;
You grieve with us and for us day by day,
And with us, sharing sorrow, will remain.
Yet You, O God, are with us in our pain;
You grieve with us and for us day by day,
And with us, sharing sorrow, will remain.
4 Because
Your Son knew agony and loss,
Felt desolation, grief and scorn and shame,
We know You will be with us, come what may,
Your loving presence near, always the same.
Felt desolation, grief and scorn and shame,
We know You will be with us, come what may,
Your loving presence near, always the same.
5 Through
long grief-darkened days help us, dear Lord,
To trust Your grace for courage to endure,
To rest our souls in Your supporting love,
And find our hope within Your mercy sure.
To trust Your grace for courage to endure,
To rest our souls in Your supporting love,
And find our hope within Your mercy sure.

Apostles'
Creed
C I
believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker
of heaven and earth.
And
in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who
was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born
of the virgin Mary,
suffered
under Pontius Pilate,
was
crucified, died and was buried.
He
descended into hell.
The
third day He rose again from the dead.
He
ascended into heaven
and
sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From
thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I
believe in the Holy Spirit,
the
holy Christian Church,
the
communion of saints,
the
forgiveness of sins,
the
resurrection of the body,
and
the life T everlasting.
Amen.

C Our
Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
