Almighty
God, our heavenly Father, we, Your unworthy servants, give You humble
and hearty thanks for all the goodness and loving-kindness that You
bestow on us. We praise You for our creation, preservation, and all
the blessings of this life. But above all, we bless You for Your
boundless love in the redemption of the world by our Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. We
implore You to give us a right understanding of all Your mercies that
our hearts may ever be deeply thankful and that we may show forth
Your praise with both our lips and our lives. Direct our lives in
ways of holiness and righteousness all our days that we may enjoy the
testimony of a good conscience and the hope of Your favor, be
sustained and comforted in every time of trouble, and finally be
received into Your everlasting kingdom; through Jesus Christ, Your
Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one
God, now and forever.
Reading
the Bible: Law and Gospel
When
the Lord speaks His word, He reveals that He works with people in two
basic ways. Lutherans use the terms Law and Gospel to distinguish
these two teachings. Recognizing our Father's Words to us in Law and
Gospel helps us keep our reading of Scripture in line with our
Father's purpose to help us identify our sin, repent of our sin, and
turn to our Savior, Jesus, for help, forgiveness, comfort, and
resurrection life. - adapted from the introduction to the Lutheran Study Bible

Genesis
The
Garden of Eden's feast ended. The ground dried up. Thorns raked the
brows and pierced the hands and feet of our first parents (3:17-19).
Cherubim and a flaming sword blocked the way to the garden, lest they
eat of the tree of life and live in their newly broken state forever.
The family suffered lasting heartbreak when Cain murders Abel.
Families have shared pains of all kinds ever since. - adapted from the introduction to Genesis in the Lutheran Study Bible

Genesis 4:1—6:8
1Now
Adam knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, saying, “I
have gotten a man with the help of the Lord.” 2And
again, she bore his brother Abel. Now Abel was a keeper of sheep, and
Cain a worker of the ground. 3In the course of time Cain
brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground, 4and
Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat
portions. And the Lord had regard for Abel and his offering, 5but
for Cain and his offering he had no regard. So Cain was very angry,
and his face fell. 6The Lord said to Cain, “Why are you
angry, and why has your face fallen? 7If you do well, will
you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin is crouching at
the door. Its desire is for you, but you must rule over it.”
8Cain
spoke to Abel his brother. And when they were in the field, Cain rose
up against his brother Abel and killed him. 9Then the Lord
said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not
know; am I my brother’s keeper?” 10And the Lord said,
“What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood is crying
to me from the ground. 11And now you are cursed from the
ground, which has opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood
from your hand. 12When you work the ground, it shall no
longer yield to you its strength. You shall be a fugitive and a
wanderer on the earth.” 13Cain said to the Lord, “My
punishment is greater than I can bear. 14Behold, you have
driven me today away from the ground, and from your face I shall be
hidden. I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer on the earth, and
whoever finds me will kill me.” 15Then the Lord said to
him, “Not so! If anyone kills Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him
sevenfold.” And the Lord put a mark on Cain, lest any who found him
should attack him. 16Then Cain went away from the presence
of the Lord and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.
17Cain
knew his wife, and she conceived and bore Enoch. When he built a
city, he called the name of the city after the name of his son,
Enoch. 18To Enoch was born Irad, and Irad fathered
Mehujael, and Mehujael fathered Methushael, and Methushael fathered
Lamech. 19And Lamech took two wives. The name of the one
was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah. 20Adah bore
Jabal; he was the father of those who dwell in tents and have
livestock. 21His brother’s name was Jubal; he was the
father of all those who play the lyre and pipe. 22Zillah
also bore Tubal-cain; he was the forger of all instruments of bronze
and iron. The sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
“Adah and
Zillah, hear my voice;
you wives of
Lamech, listen to what I say:
I have
killed a man for wounding me,
a young man
for striking me.
24If
Cain’s revenge is sevenfold,
then
Lamech’s is seventy-sevenfold.”
25And
Adam knew his wife again, and she bore a son and called his name
Seth, for she said, “God has appointed for me another offspring
instead of Abel, for Cain killed him.”
26To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord.
26To Seth also a son was born, and he called his name Enosh. At that time people began to call upon the name of the Lord.
1This
is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made
him in the likeness of God. 2Male and female he created
them, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.
3When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his
own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. 4The
days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other
sons and daughters. 5Thus all the days that Adam lived
were 930 years, and he died.
6When
Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh. 7Seth lived
after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters.
8Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died.
9When
Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. 10Enosh lived
after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters.
11Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died.
12When
Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. 13Kenan
lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and
daughters. 14Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years,
and he died.
18When
Jared had lived 162 years he fathered Enoch. 19Jared lived
after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters.
20Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died.
21When
Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. 22Enoch
walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other
sons and daughters. 23Thus all the days of Enoch were 365
years. 24Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God
took him.
25When
Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. 26Methuselah
lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and
daughters. 27Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969
years, and he died.
28When
Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son 29and called
his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed
this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful
toil of our hands.” 30Lamech lived after he fathered
Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. 31Thus
all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died.
32After
Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
1When
man began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born
to them, 2the sons of God saw that the daughters of man
were attractive. And they took as their wives any they chose. 3Then
the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not abide in man forever, for he is
flesh: his days shall be 120 years.” 4The Nephilim were
on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God
came in to the daughters of man and they bore children to them. These
were the mighty men who were of old, the men of renown.
5The
Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that
every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually. 6And the Lord was sorry that he had made man
on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. 7So the
Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face
of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the
heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” 8But
Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord.

5 Send
us Thy Spirit, teach us truth;
Thou Son, O set us free
From fancied wisdom, self-sought ways,
To make us one in Thee.
Thou Son, O set us free
From fancied wisdom, self-sought ways,
To make us one in Thee.
6 Then
shall our song united rise
To Thine eternal throne,
Where with the Father evermore
And Spirit Thou art one.
To Thine eternal throne,
Where with the Father evermore
And Spirit Thou art one.

The
Third Commandment
Remember the
Sabbath day by keeping it holy.
What does
this mean?
We should
fear and love God so that we do not despise preaching and His Word,
but hold it sacred and gladly hear and learn it.
Apostles'
Creed
C I
believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker

And in
Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who

was
crucified, died and was buried.
He
descended into hell.
The

He
ascended into heaven
and
sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From
thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe
in the Holy Spirit,
the

the

the

the
resurrection of the body,
and
the life T everlasting.

Genesis 4 begins with a murder and traces how the shadow of violence lengthens until Lamech perverts God's intention for marriage by taking two wives and boasts that he is 77 times more violent than his murderous ancestor Cain. But we also learn of the birth of Seth, through whom God's promise (3:15) will continue. God's plan is not stopped by murder. God appoints another seed of the woman to receive the promise and to carry the story forward. The promise continues to unfold until it comes at last to the cross. There, Satan tries to derail God's plan by killing the seed of the woman. Once again, God prevails, not by appointing another, but by raising Jesus from the dead in declaration that the work is finished, creation is redeemed, and death itself--the chief effect of the fall--is put to death.
