Collect
O
Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, You have
safely brougt us to the beginning of this day. Defend us in the same
with Your mighty power, and grant that this day we fall into no sin,
neither run into any kind of danger, but that all our doings, being
ordered by Your governance, may be righteous in Your sight; through
Jesus Christ, our Lord.

Reading
Exodus 1:1–22
These
are the names of the sons of Israel who came to Egypt with Jacob,
each with his household: Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah, Issachar,
Zebulun, and Benjamin, Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. All the
descendants of Jacob were seventy persons; Joseph was already in
Egypt. Then Joseph died, and all his brothers and all that
generation. But the people of Israel were fruitful and increased
greatly; they multiplied and grew exceedingly strong, so that the
land was filled with them.
Now
there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he
said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and
too mighty for us. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they
multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight
against us and escape from the land.” Therefore they set
taskmasters over them to afflict them with heavy burdens. They built
for Pharaoh store cities, Pithom and Raamses. But the more they were
oppressed, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad.
And the Egyptians were in dread of the people of Israel. So they
ruthlessly made the people of Israel work as slaves and made their
lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and brick, and in all kinds
of work in the field. In all their work they ruthlessly made them
work as slaves.
Then
the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named
Shiphrah and the other Puah, “When you serve as midwife to the
Hebrew women and see them on the birthstool, if it is a son, you
shall kill him, but if it is a daughter, she shall live.” But the
midwives feared God and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded
them, but let the male children live. So the king of Egypt called the
midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this, and let the
male children live?” The midwives said to Pharaoh, “Because the
Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women, for they are vigorous
and give birth before the midwife comes to them.” So God dealt well
with the midwives. And the people multiplied and grew very strong.
And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. Then
Pharaoh commanded all his people, “Every son that is born to the
Hebrews you shall cast into the Nile, but you shall let every
daughter live.”

Apostles'
Creed
C I
believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker
of heaven and earth.
And
in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,
who
was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born
of the virgin Mary,
suffered
under Pontius Pilate,
was
crucified, died and was buried.
He
descended into hell.
The
third day He rose again from the dead.
He
ascended into heaven
and
sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From
thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I
believe in the Holy Spirit,
the
holy Christian Church,
the
communion of saints,
the
forgiveness of sins,
the
resurrection of the body,
and
the life T everlasting.
Amen.
Confession
What
is Confession?
Confession
has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we
receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God
Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are
forgiven before God in heaven.
What
sins should we confess?
Before
God we should plead guilty of all sins, even those we are not aware
of, as we do in the Lord's Prayer; but before the pastor we should
confess only those sins which we know and feel in our hearts.
Which
are these?
Consider
your place in life according to the Ten Commandments. Are you a
father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, or worker? Have you
been disobedient, unfaithful, or lazy? Have you been hot-tempered,
rude, or quarrelsome? Have you hurt someone by your words or deeds?
Have you stolen, been negligent, wasted anything, or done any harm?
What
is the Office of the Keys?
The
Office of the Keys is that special authority which Christ has given
to His Church on earth to forgive the sins of repentant sinners, but
to withhold forgiveness from the unrepentant as long as they do not
repent.
Where
is this written?
This
is what St. John the Evangelist writes in chapter twenty: The Lord
Jesus breathed on His disciples and said, "Receive the Holy
Spirit. If you forgive anyone his sins, they are forgiven; if you do
not forgive them, they are not forgiven." (John 20:22–23)
What
do you believe according to these words?
I
believe that when the called ministers of Christ deal with us by His
divine command, in particular when they exclude openly unrepentant
sinners from the Christian congregation and absolve those who repent
of their sins and want to do better, this is just as valid and
certain, even in heaven, as if Christ our dear Lord dealt with us
Himself.
Lord's
Prayer
C Our
Father who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name,
Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.
Luther's
Morning Prayer
C I
thank You, my heavenly Father, through Jesus Christ, Your dear Son,
that You have kept me this night from all harm and danger; and I pray
that You would keep me this day also from sin and every evil, that
all my doings and life may please You. For into Your hands I commend
myself, my body and soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be
with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me. Amen.
Luther's

soul, and all things. Let Your holy angel be with me, that the evil
foe may have no power over me. Amen.
